PRIME Minister John Howard does not care about the environment, noted environmentalist Dr David Suzuki said today.

Mr Howard regarded the economy as paramount, ignoring vital environmental initiatives such as the Kyoto Protocol, Dr Suzuki said.
And he blindly followed the lead of the US and President George W. Bush.
"Australia and the US have become these two countries so far out of step with the rest of the world," Dr Suzuki, who arrived in Australia last night, told a news conference today.
It's very sad."

When the Kyoto Protocol was drawn up in 1997, Australia was the only country allowed to set a greenhouse gas emissions target 8 per cent above 1990 levels, Dr Suzuki said.
A total of 141 countries have signed the Kyoto Protocol, which aims to get the industrial world to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 5.2 per cent by 2012, with targets set according to each country's pollution level.
Australia and the US are the only developed nations not to have signed.
Dr Suzuki, who has three formal speaking engagements in Australia, described the Federal Government's position as outrageous.
"The environment obviously doesn't matter to Mr Howard - he's not serious."
"There is a very strong 'green' feeling throughout this country at the grassroots level but it's totally mystifying to me why that doesn't translate into the people you elect to office."
