Star we missed has a hissy fit
February 22, 2005
RECOGNISE this man's face? No? Well, that seems to be his problem.
He's American comedian Jamie Kennedy who spent five months in Sydney shooting the sequel to Jim Carey's The Mask -- and it seems he's suffered from some attention deficit disorder while here.
While promoting the The Son of The Mask in the US in recent weeks, the Hollywood star has expressed his vehement dislike for Sydneysiders.
He accuses us of not being "real", described the women as "uppity", the men as drinking too much and restaurant waiters as overpaid and, consequently, rude.
"Sydney acts like it's not impressed by celebrity. Yes, they are," Kennedy said.
"That's the funny thing. London is not impressed by celebrity. They don't care. Sydney acts like it isn't, but it is and it goes out of its way to say FU."
Kennedy's co-star, Traylor Howard, says that Sydney women didn't pay Kennedy any attention could have been his problem -- he didn't get the star treatment he was used to.
"He did not get recognised," Howard, who lived in Bondi while here explained.
"I think he was so used to the ladies recognising him. I think it had a little bit to do with it.
"He had fun, but the girls just weren't as flirty over there."
Kennedy must have taken some pretty heavy knock-backs from the "uppity" women of Sydney as he not only mouthed off on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno but to newspaper and magazine reporters in Los Angeles and around the world -- and made it clear he wanted Sydneysiders to read his reports. "You can print this. I don't care," he said.
"Sydney thinks it is Paris but it is really Nebraska," Kennedy told Canada's Toronto Star newspaper.
"I love the Gold Coast, I love Brisbane, I love Melbourne," Kennedy said.
And as a city, Sydney was OK but it was just the people he couldn't stand.
"The food is great. The city is great. The feeling of the place is great. The beaches are great. It's just the girls and some of the guys got on my nerves."
