Aussie officer awarded US Bronze Star
An Australian army officer has been awarded the United States Bronze Star for his outstanding service while on an exchange posting with US forces in Iraq.
The medal was presented to Major Perry Gunder on Wednesday at a ceremony at the Australian Defence Warfare Centre at RAAF Williamtown, outside Newcastle.
Presenting the medal on behalf of the US, centre commandant Brigadier David McKaskill said it recognised his exceptional and meritorious service during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"Major Gunder's performance is in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the Australian army," he said in a statement.
Major Gunder's former American Chief of Staff, Colonel Carl Chapell, said he was an excellent leader, remaining calm during difficult and stressful times.
"He is a fine example of an officer and leader and has represented the Australian army with distinction."
As army, navy and air force staff from the warfare centre paraded for the presentation, Major Gunder singled out his wife, Melinda, for her constant support during his often challenging deployment.
"It's a sobering experience to arrive in a hostile environment like Iraq and be isolated from your countrymen," he said.
"I express my gratitude and respect for the United States armed forces and particularly the US army.
"The level of acceptance and trust displayed in us (Australians) as coalition partners enables us to contribute our full potential."
The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to individuals who, while serving in any capacity with the armed forces of the United States in a combat theatre, distinguish themselves by heroism, outstanding achievement or by meritorious service.
