THE leader of a terrorist network banned by the Australian government was closely associated with Osama bin Laden and was behind a string of attacks in Iraq, Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said today.
Terrorist network al-Zarqawi yesterday became the 18th organisation to be listed under Australia's counter-terrorism laws.
Al-Zarqawi is a Sunni Islamist extremist network established and led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, which claimed responsibility for a truck bomb attack on Australian military barracks in Baghdad last month.
Mr Ruddock told reporters in Sydney that the network's leader had associated with bin Laden and also had been jailed for offences in Jordan.
"The advice is that his organisation has played a significant role in a large number of identified attacks that have occurred in Iraq ...," Mr Ruddock said.
"Our interest is to have the organisation prescribed. We followed the normal procedures."
Mr Ruddock would not comment on whether there had been reports of Australians involved in the terrorist network either in Australia or Iraq, or whether the government had been tipped off by Australians in Iraq.
But he said any Australian found to be involved with al-Zarqawi would be charged.
"Obviously we wouldn't want people in Australia associating with that organisation, funding that organisation or participating in its activities."
Mr Ruddock denied that there had been a delay in adding the network to Australia's list of banned organisations, saying the recommendation to do so had only now been made.
He would not say which agencies had provided information on the network, but said state premiers had been notified about the listing of al-Zarqawi.
