A HUNGARIAN military tribunal has issued an international arrest warrant against an 86-year old Hungarian-born Australian suspecting of murdering a Jew during World War II, court sources said today.
Charles Zentai, who now lives in Perth, Western Australia, is suspected of having tortured and murdered an 18-year-old Jewish victim in Budapest in 1944 while serving in the army of Hitler's wartime ally Hungary.
"An international arrest warrant has been issued against Zentai," an official from the military tribunal said on condition of anonymity.
The case now goes to the Justice Minister Jozsef Petretei, who will decide whether to ask Australia to extradite the suspect.
An estimated 600,000 Hungarian Jews were killed by German Nazis and Hungary's collaborationist regime during World War II.
