ABOUT 50 Palestinian protesters staged a demonstration against Israeli President Moshe Katsav in Melbourne tonight.
Chanting "free Palestine" the protesters were held at bay by police horses as the president entered the Palais Theatre in St Kilda through a side door.
Security was tight around the building and police said the protesters were peaceful and no arrests were made.
Police said Mr Katsav left the venue without incident.
Earlier today, the president addressed Jewish students and community leaders at Mount Scopus Memorial College in the Melbourne suburb of Burwood as part of his six-day Australian state visit.
